The Psychology of Code Review Feedback: Why How You Say It Matters as Much as What You Say
Code review feedback that's technically correct but socially clumsy produces defensiveness, erodes trust, and slows the learning it's supposed to accelerate. Here's the science and the practice.

The outcomes of their reviews are not.
The first comment creates a mildly adversarial dynamic — the author is implicitly being told they made an obvious mistake. The second comment treats the author as a peer who might have information the reviewer doesn't, opens a dialogue about the design intent, and makes the author feel like a collaborator in the review rather than a subject of it. The author who received the second comment is significantly more likely to engage with the feedback, more likely to share the reasoning behind their choice, and more likely to learn from the exchange.

"This doesn't feel right" or "I'd approach this differently" without specifics leaves the author uncertain what to change and unable to improve in any direction. Every critical comment should meet the specificity test: can the author take a concrete action in response to this feedback? If not, rewrite the comment until they can.
Positive Feedback Is Technically Useful
Code review cultures that only surface problems create an implicit message that good code is invisible. This is demoralizing and produces a specific behavior: authors stop trying novel approaches because the return on risky decisions is asymmetric — the downside (critical feedback) is visible and the upside (no feedback) is invisible.
